CHAPEL AT SAN JUAN BHAVAN
The Unichira Chapel, a product of contextual conditioning and an element of escape from the monotony. It acts asa sacred buffer enveloping and shielding the existing restricted spaces.
FORM EVOLUTION AND PLANNING
The chapel is sited with respect to the existing structures(east) and the curvedpath
leading to the private seminary area (west). The sacred space adapts to the shape of the path and the linearity
of the existing spaces. Thus the frontage of the chapel is projected in the plan as a curved oval space which is
in respect to the existing pathway and the straight edges are maintained on the other end adjoining the dwellings.
The obtained shape of the chapelbreaks the rigidity, and the curve gives a sense of movement and direction.
The existing vegetation was retained while planning.
The chapel exhibits a double height throughout the northern face which
is in accordance with the already existent spaces adjoining it and gradually
narrows down as it proceeds to the south, enhancing the entrance as well as the aisles or walkways.
